Lake Tahoe can be described in one word — serenity. There is something about the combination of lush green forests, clear turquoise water, and mountains that make this area just so peaceful. Not only do you have some jaw-dropping views in the area, but there are also endless activities you can do for your elopement.
To take care of all of your questions, I’ve put together this post, which includes everything you need to know about eloping in Lake Tahoe. What are the best elopement spots? What time of year will suit you the most? And what are the all-important practical steps required? Read on to find out.
How To Get To Lake Tahoe
By Plane:
The easiest way to get to Lake Tahoe would be to fly into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). The airport is located just 45 minutes from North Lake Tahoe, making it the closest airport. You can also fly into the Sacramento International Airport (SMF). It is a 2-hour drive, but it may be a better option if you plan to stay on the California side.
By Car:
No matter which airport you choose to fly to, the best way to get around Lake Tahoe is by renting a car. The final stretch of the journey is incredibly eye-catching, with views of mountain vistas as you make your way closer to your chosen location.
Pro Tip: Download offline Google Maps directions on your phone so that even when you lose service as you get closer to the park, you can still receive navigation.
The Best Time of Year To Get Married In Lake Tahoe
Spring
Spring in Lake Tahoe is short and sweet. The temperatures climb to the 50s and 60s, though there will still probably be some snow on the popular trails. That’s not a bad thing, though, as it gives you the option of skiing or swimming in the freshwater. Late spring brings the super lush greens and the crystal blue waters you think of when you think of Lake Tahoe. Many outdoor events begin at this time, if you and your partner are lovers of entertainment.
Summer
Summer is definitely warm with the temperatures climbing into the 80s during August and July! This gives you the freedom for epic water activities like swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and boating. For this reason, this is the most popular season in Lake Tahoe. Finding an intimate spot is more challenging, but to balance that out, the sun’s bright enough to spend a whole day on the beach if you wish to!
Fall
Personally, the fall is my favorite season in Lake Tahoe! It’s comparable to the spring, just without the snow on the trails. After Labor Day, the crowds really die down in the area and prices for lodging and activities go down a bit too. You can expect cooler (while still enjoyable) weather with occasional light rain in the fall, with the huge variation of fall colors as nature goes through its yearly transformation.
Winter
Dreaming of a winter wonderland elopement? Maybe skiing or snowboarding? Winter is definitely your time. Lake Tahoe is one of the snowiest places in the United States getting an average of 215 inches per year! Rather than causing everything to shut down, the area thrives in the cold. Lake Tahoe is renowned for its winter sports, so it’s the perfect spot if that is exactly what you’re into.
Best Places To Elope In Lake Tahoe
This stunning 2,500 stretch of beach has the classic Lake Tahoe look with the rocks sticking out of the crystal clear turquoise water. While you can’t actually get married on the beach itself, you can have your ceremony at the Ramada and then take some epic photos on the sand afterwards! The beach also has a ton of rentals from kayaking to paddle boarding.
Recognized as a National Natural Landmark, Emerald Bay and the Emerald Bay Overlook are prime contenders to host your special day. Home to Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm, the Scandinavian vibe adds something different to the day. The contrast of crystal-clear water and snow-covered mountains makes you feel like you’re stepping back in history. It also has one of the best views from Inspiration Point.
While I can support you with getting permits, Emerald Bay has an exclusive aura to it, with limited spaces for ceremonies. You can check availability here and make sure to complete all the relevant paperwork. Availability also depends on the size of the group joining you, so keep that in mind.
You don’t have to hike far to find awesome, elevated panoramic views on the Monkey Rock trail. The name comes from the carved granite rock which, you guessed it, resembles a monkey. Years ago, the indigenous Washoe Tribe saw the sacred nature of this location, and you’ll understand why the moment you set foot here. It’s a hidden gem well worth the mild monkeying around to get to.
If somewhere has the word bliss in its name, you know it’s going to be good, although this was named after a banker who donated land, and not from all the tourists and elopers! This park doesn’t disappoint. Second in popularity to Emerald Bay, this park offers a mixture of beaches and hiking trails, plus access to Lake Tahoe’s tranquil waters, and the 20-foot “balancing rock” which seems to defy gravity.
Hidden Beach features rocky alcoves, the iconic blue lake, super soft sand, and a few outstanding choices for your elopement. Okay, it’s not completely hidden, more of a well-known secret, especially for paddle-boarders and kayakers. But, all things considered, it’s a destination that many elopers adore.
Located on the east side of the lake in Nevada, Logan Shoals Vista Point is perfect for sunset ceremonies, post-ceremony sunset photos, enjoying the sunset with a glass of champagne…sunsets, sunsets, sunsets — I’m here for them. There’s a private elevated space where the vows and ring exchange take place, and, to carry on the theme, this location is ideal for sunset weddings.

How To Get A Marriage License In Lake Tahoe
The process for getting a marriage license in Lake Tahoe depends on the state your ceremony will take place. The Nevada side requires a Nevada marriage license (no surprises there), an officiant, and one witness. The California side requires a public or confidential California marriage license, and also an officiant, and one witness.
If you want to get married on the California side of Lake Tahoe, you’ll need a public or confidential California marriage license, an officiant, and one witness.
Just So You Know: I am an ordained officiant and can legally sign on your marriage certificate in most U.S. states. Certain states may require additional paperwork and/or processing fees but I’m happy to help! However, if you would like an actual celebrant to verbally walk you through a ceremony, I know some great people who can do that for you.
